Sustainability
A the heart of every cake I bake

Conscious Baking
At Piper’s Bakery, every cake I make reflects the care and thought I put into it - for the people enjoying it and for the planet.
Whether it’s a hand-painted wedding cake or a special celebration treat, I craft each one with sustainability in mind, choosing ingredients carefully and using eco-friendly techniques wherever I can.
It’s important to me that there is no greenwashing when it comes to my conscious choices as a business owner and professional baker. I’ve seen far to much waste in the hospitality industry to ignore and have too greater love for nature to knowingly contribute to it’s decline.
Vegan cakes for a greener future
About ten years ago, I made the switch from vegetarian to vegan after learning more about animal welfare and the environmental impact of our food choices.
Choosing vegan helps reduce our carbon footprint, lower the impact on ecosystems, and protect important resources such as land and water use.
I worked hard to develop incredible vegan recipes, with light, fluffy sponges and silky buttercreams that were full of flavour. I began Piper’s Bakery to show people just how good vegan cake can be.

Carefully chosen ingredients
It’s important to me that, wherever possible, my ingredients come from sustainable sources, and I’m always looking for new ways to improve this without compromising on taste.
Our dark chocolate and organic cocoa comes from Real Foods, a company I trust to select the most delicious ingredients with strong ethical and environmental values.
I’ll often choose ingredients packed in paper, over those in plastic - buying loose fruit where possible.
I’m currently exploring ways to add organic flour into the mix, as I know how harmful chemicals can be to our nature - so watch this space!
Less waste, more thought
Working in professional bakeries across London, I saw a mountain of milk, cream, butter and eggs both consumed and thoughtlessly wasted through spoilage, accidents and end of day waste.
I wanted my business to be different: thoughtful, kind, and not wasteful.
I’ve created a wedding cake menu using only plant-based ingredients, that I know I can use before their expiry date - so there is less room for waste.
I’m careful about quantities, making only what I need. Any left over cut offs are happily devoured by my partner Dan, or taken to my friends and family.
More planet-friendly choices
Solar panels to generate renewable energy
I’ve switched to EcoTalk, a mobile network that puts 100% of their profit into rewilding nature
Plastic-free sponges from SEEP
Eco-friendly cleaning products from SMOL & Minimal
Eco-friendly taster box packaging from Tiny Box Co
Reusable piping bags (my hand painted cakes rarely need them anyway)
No unnecessary gloves (because clean hands and tools do the job better!)
Giving back to nature
I’m aware that there is more to do, and sustainability isn’t just what happens in the kitchen. Since so much of my wedding cake inspiration comes from nature, it feels right to help bring back our local ecosystems.
I’m proud to regularly donate to Heal Somerset, a local rewilding charity working to restore nature and biodiversity. I recently visited (they are just outside of Frome) and was blown away by the number of insects and birds I could see and hear, and the evidence of so much wildlife returning. It’s a beautiful place.
Check out their amazing Wildlife Trail-Cams to see some of their incredible work.
